Zhu Xian/Celestial Destroyer Online

Zhu Xian Online (Celestial Destroyer Online) is another MMO from the makers of Perfect World which ironically is very similar to the other games they have made. From the beginning, its pretty obvious that its just another copy of Perfect World with some changes to it and its suppose to be a brand new game. This works at first but after a while, people expect something new, not more of the same.

Story:

I didn't really pay much attention to the story, but its basically you going around to do some minor quests and eventually hitting lvl 15 to do a quest to join a clan. You have to do the quests in order for the next ones to appear otherwise you can't progress. Another feature that was in Perfect World.

Graphics:

The graphics are pretty good. There are nice visual effects, but the character and monster models are pretty bland. The terrain is also not very appealing. If you've seen one game by these guys you've seen them all. There isn't much graphical improvement from their previous games. The effects are really the only thing that actually stands out in the game. Everything else is more of the same. The only plus side is that they didn't recycle character models and monsters from any of their previous games for this (not that I know of anyways).

Gameplay:

If you've played Perfect World, you've probably played this game as well. The game is set up in the exact same way so that if you've played any of their previous games before, you can just jump right in and start killing. If this all sounds familiar to you, its because its exactly the same as Perfect World.

Character creation is quite limited. You have a small selection of 7 faces and 7 hairs to mix and match to make up your character. It doesn't really matter much since your head gear ends up replacing your hair unless you choose to turn it off. Your armor will affect the way you look. If people don't turn off their head gear, you pretty much have everyone in the game looking exactly the same minus the face. In other words, character customization sucks.

You start off in the newbie area where you have to run around to complete some quests. The main quests are all marked with a yellow flag or yellow arrow thing to tell you that its part of the main story. You basically follow the quests until you reach level 15. The good part is that there's repeatable quests available for a bit of exp so that you can level up faster. The downside is that you can only work on 1 quest at a time. If you get 3 quests to kill the same mob, you will need to kill the total number required for all 3 mobs, not just the one with the maximum number of kills. This is annoying since you often have multiple quests that require you to kill the same mob. Some quest mobs are limited to 1 at a time so people will have to fight for them.

The path finding system in the game is very nice. You can open up a transparent map, click on where you want to go, and your character will immediately start running to the location using the shortest route possible. Its very good for getting around places and you don't want to having to deal with running all the way to the other side of the map manually.

After some quests, you are introduced to talismans. Talismans give you new skills and boost your stats. If you have a matching set of 2 or 3 talismans, they boost each other's stats and provide greater bonuses. You can level up some talismans by using the skills corresponding to the talisman. Its basically a way to force players to skill grind. Healers have no problem with this since they can keep casting it, but fighter classes have to spam it on mobs to level it up. The talisman system is poorly implemented and it attempts to make the game last longer by forcing you to grind skills and your normal exp. If they wanted to implement a good talisman system, Talisman Online is a good way to do it. EXP based on kills that let you convert it to skill exp basically. Here, they make you cast the skill 350x before your talisman reaches level 2.

Once you reach level 15, you have the option of choosing your class/school which affects what skills you can get and learn. There are basically 5 different schools for you to choose from. The 5 are Azure Cloud (AoE mage), Heaven Sound (support), Bonding Bliss (thief), Ghost Witchery (druid), and Ghost King (warrior). Ghost Witchery is the most complicated because skills affect their stats and combat abilities while the rest are pretty straight forward. The quest to join schools are annoying. The one for Bonding Bliss requires you to follow an NPC around and wait for him to spawn the mobs you need to kill. I haven't experimented with the other ones yet since level 15 requires basically 2 straight hours of 2x exp, quests, and some luck to reach. If it feels like it, it will throw you back into town and you have to go to him again. If you do find him, you need to camp him until he summons the mobs and then you and everyone else trying to do the quest will have to try to swarm him and get a kill in. The mobs are weak and die in 1 hit so if someone felt like it, they could just spam AoE on it and kill all the mobs to prevent players from being able to choose a class in the game. Eventually you will have to do quests to advance your position in your school.

Once you get a talisman, you basically get an automated botting system as well. With kills and going AFK, the red bar on the talisman charges. Once it fills, you can activate bot mode. You get 1 second of botting for every 1 mana that the talisman has. Each one starts off with about 4 minute worth of botting and increases as it levels up. You can change some settings to make it attack certain monsters or only quest monsters or focus on boss monsters. You can also control how far it will move from the spot where you started it if you don't want it to wander off too far.

Your inventory is fairly small too. It starts off with 24 slots but there are ways to expand your inventory (just like Perfect World). The variety of different items that can drop makes it very easy to fill up your inventory and you can't grind for extended periods of time without having to travel back to town each time to unload your bags. The equipment screen already promises to have a lot of different items for item mall users such as facial expressions and at least 6 different fashion slots.

So far the game promises the same faults of Perfect World such as a heavily reliance on the item mall to progress in the game. There is already evidence that the item mall system is the only way to obtain auto potions and evidence that special items to boost the success rate of refining and certain drops will be provided. There is always the possibility that they might not go this route, but that is very unlikely.

Grouping:

The incentive to group in Zhu Xian Online is practically nonexistent. You can't share kills for mobs between players. You can share loot in turn in parties and there are guilds, but there's no real incentive to do either yet. There's a few bosses for parties, but 2 people with 1 of them being a healer so far are capable of taking it on already. There's also a list for friends, blacklist, and a list for players that have Pked you. There's a global competition ranking but that doesn't really count.

Overall:

This games is developing into something very much like Perfect World with pretty much very little difference. The game creators need to improve on the design, not throw more of the same. It has enough to keep it from being a bad game, but there's not enough to make it a good game. The item mall might change this game into one that is heavily dependent on the item mall. There are various other minor issues, but nothing that hasn't worked itself out somehow in other MMOs anyways.

Final Score:

5/10 – More of the same from Perfect World with some minor new additions, worth trying if you like the system. If you're not a fan of their games you won't like this.
